Keeping up with environment and climate news from the Middle East
Provided by AGPAccording to reports, the announcement followed a series of high-level meetings in Tehran involving Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, as part of Islamabad’s continuing mediation efforts.
A statement from the Pakistan Army described the past 24 hours of negotiations as productive, noting that intensive discussions had contributed to movement toward a broader agreement.
“The intensive negotiations over the last 24 hours have resulted in encouraging progress towards a final understanding,” the statement said after the conclusion of Munir’s visit.
During the trip, Munir met with senior Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Talks reportedly focused on reducing tensions and advancing diplomatic engagement between the conflicting parties.
Reports indicated that the discussions were held in what officials described as a constructive environment, with all sides expressing support for continued mediation aimed at regional stability.
Iranian officials also reportedly acknowledged Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue and encouraging a peaceful resolution.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has separately said there has been “some progress” in ongoing negotiations.
Reports added that the broader conflict began after US and Israeli strikes against Iran in February, followed by Iranian retaliation targeting Israel and US-aligned Gulf partners, as well as disruptions involving the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire was later reached on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, although follow-up talks in Islamabad reportedly failed to secure a permanent settlement. The truce was subsequently extended indefinitely.
