Iraq Halts Oil Port Operations After Tanker Attack in Territorial Waters
Farhan al-Fartousi, Director General of the state-run General Company for Ports of Iraq, explained that the suspension at oil ports is a precautionary measure while authorities assess the security situation and ensure safe maritime navigation and protection of oil export facilities.
The attack reportedly caused a fire on parts of the vessel, which emergency teams were able to control, preventing further damage. Preliminary investigations indicate there was no major oil spill or significant environmental impact. Authorities have launched an inquiry to determine the circumstances of the incident and identify those responsible.
Al-Fartousi emphasized that loading and unloading at commercial terminals remain unaffected, and that maritime authorities are reinforcing security measures across shipping lanes and ports to safeguard vessels and maintain trade operations.
Analysts note that Iraq depends heavily on its southern oil ports to supply global markets, and any prolonged disruption could affect global oil supplies, especially amid heightened regional security tensions and concerns over the safety of energy transport routes.
