Syrian Troops Move into Qamishli Following Deal with YPG/SDF

(MENAFN) Syrian security forces are set to move into the city of Qamishli in northeastern Syria’s Al-Hasakah countryside as part of an agreement reached with the YPG/SDF, a Syrian official said on Monday, according to reports.

The statement was made by Hasakah’s Internal Security Commander Marwan al-Ali, who spoke hours after forces had already begun entering the city. He said the initial deployment in Hasakah would be followed by a similar presence in Qamishli, explaining, “A number of vehicles and Interior Ministry personnel entered Hasakah today, to be followed by the entry of similar vehicles and forces into Qamishli,” without giving a specific schedule.

Al-Ali confirmed that security units linked to the SDF would be incorporated into state structures once the agreement is carried out, saying, “Asayish forces and other security forces affiliated with the SDF will be integrated into the Interior Ministry’s structure after the implementation of the agreement’s provisions.”

He added that media access to Hasakah had been restricted due to the uncertain security environment, stating, “We decided not to allow journalists to enter the city of Hasakah due to the ambiguous situation, to avoid provocations and to ensure their safety.”

According to his remarks, existing forces in Hasakah will remain stationed where they are, while additional units move into Qamishli. He confirmed this by saying, “the security forces currently present in Hasakah will remain in their positions and similar forces will enter Qamishli.”

Earlier in the day, reports said internal security units had entered Al-Hasakah and were welcomed by residents.

Observers on the ground reported that the convoy included armored personnel carriers, four-wheel-drive vehicles, ambulances, and mobile communications equipment, and that it proceeded toward the city center.

In addition, Syrian internal security forces were deployed to the village of Shuyukh, south of the Ayn al-Arab district, as part of the same arrangement.

These steps are being taken under the implementation of what authorities have described as a “comprehensive agreement” announced on Friday with the SDF, aimed at ending Syria’s internal divisions and paving the way for a new phase of nationwide integration.
